Volvo V50 boot space

It’s useful, safe and inexpensive – three major qualities you should look for in a family estate car. Let’s take a look at the Volvo V50’s boot space.

A silver Volvo V50

The Volvo V50 is an old favourite. Despite its production run ending in 2012, it shows no signs of fading into oblivion anytime soon, with some great models still out there.

It’s no stranger to awards, either. In 2005, the Volvo V50 won five major awards, including Top Gear Magazine Estate Car and What Car? Car of the Year.

The manufacturer itself has an unrivalled reputation for safety. But, as an older Volvo, how does the V50 compare?

Spoiler alert: excellently.

The Volvo V50 was way ahead of its time and gets full marks in the safety department.

In fact, the model received a five-star overall safety from Euro NCAP – the highest possible rating.

This is thanks to the advanced airbags, electronic stability control and the car’s strong structure, which is designed to absorb and distribute crash energy.

Practical, reliable and safe – is there anything more important in a family estate car?

It’s also cost-effective and doesn’t compromise on necessities. We’ve explored the Volvo V40 and Volvo V90, but let’s see if the Volvo V50’s boot is worth celebrating.

What are the Volvo V50 boot dimensions?

If you expect the Volvo V50 to deliver a generous amount of room, you won’t be disappointed.

With the rear seats upright, the boot measures 417 litres.

This is a little on the small side compared to rivals such as the BMW 3 Series (480 litres) and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (455 litres).

However, if you fold the rear seats down, you get a very respectable 1,307 litres.

There’s even the option to fold the front passenger seat down if you’re carrying longer loads.

Volvo V50 boot dimensions

  • Length of boot floor (rear seats folded or removed): 1,531mm

  • Length of boot floor (rear seats upright): 934mm

  • Vertical height of boot opening: 694mm

  • Boot sill height to floor of car: 33mm

  • Width of boot floor at narrowest point: 967mm

How long and wide is a Volvo V50?

The Volvo V50 measures at 4,514mm in length, 1,770mm in width, and 1,452mm in height.

If you have the 2008 facelift variants, however, it’s 4,522mm in length, 1,845mm in width, and 1,457mm in height.

If you feel the V50 isn’t quite big enough for you, you should consider the V60 – it’s enormous.

Alternatively, if you just like the versatility of an estate but fancy something a bit smaller, the Volvo V40 could be the car for you.

How big is a Volvo V50’s boot?

With the rear bench folded down, you have 1,307 litres to play with. This is enough to fit around six large suitcases, pushchairs, wheelchairs, a range of work equipment, or pet crates.

Need people in seats? With the rear bench in use, you get 417 litres.

This is less than the Volvo XC60, but still enough for a few suitcases.

If you only need your vehicle to do the weekly shop or a small family staycation every now and again, adjusting to this boot size will be a breeze.

How many seats are in a Volvo V50?

The Volvo V50 is flexible, meaning it can seat five people with ample boot space.

The back seats are spacious for passengers, with enough leg and headroom for both children and adults.

As Volvo prides itself on the safety of its cars, it should come as no surprise that passengers can travel in confidence.

There’s a unique side-impact protection system that helps prevent injuries, as well as numerous airbags and an optional blind-spot monitoring system.

If you want a car you can trust in terms of safety and reliability, the Volvo V50 should do the job – with room to spare.
