What is BMW xDrive? The AWD system explained
Find out what xDrive means on BMW and if the AWD system suits your needs
If you’re in the market for a BMW, you’ve probably come across the famed xDrive system but might still be wondering ‘what does xDrive mean?’.
xDrive is an intelligent all-wheel drive system offered by BMW, and it claims it's ‘one of the most technically advanced all-wheel drive systems in the segment’.
We’d have to agree – xDrive is a joy to live with and improves the all-round performance of your car.
If you want an all-wheel drive model that offers performance finesse, BMW xDrive is up there with the best.
How does BMW xDrive work?
The main reason many of us gravitate towards all-wheel drive systems is for extra grip on testing terrain. BMW xDrive takes that further by offering a smart system that senses when you need support.
In poor weather or on slippery surfaces, xDrive uses Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) sensors to detect if any of wheels are slipping.
If it feels like traction is being lost, the electronically controlled multi-disc clutch will send more power to the wheels with the best grip to keep the car stable.
BMW xDrive is also unique in that it can send almost all its power to either axel in as little as 0.1 seconds. It's one of the best BMW systems on offer.

Benefits of xDrive all-wheel drive
There are a few benefits of BMW xDrive, especially if you’re accustomed to the rear-wheel drive set-up that BMW’s have previously been known for.
It’s no secret that increased performance is one of the main benefits of switching to xDrive all-wheel drive.
BMW xDrive models can accelerate faster as all wheels receive power, so you’re not just getting the push from the rear or a pull from the front.
The obvious benefit of xDrive is the improved traction and grip you get on all surfaces, making light work of wet, muddy and icy terrain.
This is ideal if you live in a more rural area or have an outdoorsy lifestyle but means you’re not sacrificing luxury and style for added practicality.
BMW models with xDrive
Popular models with BMW xDrive include:
The BMW 1 Series is a great entry point into luxury cars if you want something smaller but still prestigious. You can get an xDrive BMW 1 Series to make light work of challenging weather conditions and road surfaces, without the need for a massive off-roading SUV.
For something larger but still not quite an SUV, the BMW 3 Series with xDrive is a cult-favourite and all-round icon on the roads. Performance has always been impressive, but the xDrive system gives the 3 Series even more power. The M340i xDrive model can achieve up to 382hp with a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds.
If you want to switch to electric power, the BMW iX xDrive models offer impressive range and a performance-perky drive. The xDrive50 model gets as much as 523hp and 383 miles of range.
Then, for a classic BMW SUV, the X3 gets the xDrive system as well as semi-autonomous driving systems, TwinPower turbo engines and the option of a plug-in hybrid model.
sDrive vs xDrive: differences explained
Where BMW xDrive models are always four-wheel drive, sDrive BMWs are only ever two-wheel drive. If a BMW is marketed as sDrive, it will either be front-wheel drive like the BMW 1 Series, or rear-wheel drive like the BMW Z4.
You’ll find sDrive cars use less fuel than xDrive but don’t quite measure up for performance. The xDrive offers more dynamic handling and traction so can be more fun to drive.
However, you will have to pay extra for the privilege of performance and traction as xDrive is more costly.
Cars available with sDrive include the BMW 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, Z4, and SUVs like the X3 and X6.
xDrive vs rear-wheel drive performance
Although xDrive systems have the capability to send all power to the rear wheels, they typically use a 40% front wheel and 60% rear wheel balance during normal driving.
Rear-wheel drive BMWs drive with power moving the rear wheels at all times and was once the standard for all BMWs.
The brand was famous for its nimble rear-wheel drive performance. With all power at the rear of the car, drivers enjoyed the improved handling that comes when the front wheels are focused purely on steering and not handling masses of power.
Fans of xDrive appreciate that you’ll be able to get faster off-the-line times with four-wheel drive, but the rear-wheel models are nimbler and will be loads of fun on a track.
Rear-wheel drive models are also lighter than xDrive - so while you’ll get a faster launch on xDrive models, the rear-wheel drive might feel slicker once you get going.
Should I buy a used BMW car with xDrive?
It’s well worth considering a BMW xDrive model if you want a vehicle that brings impressive performance, can handle testing weather and can be rapid off the line.
The xDrive SUV models are particularly ideal for those with an outdoorsy lifestyle, while it's also reassuring to have improved grip in sleek saloons in case the weather takes a turn.
You'll get that BMW reliability and high quality finish, as well.
You do usually have to pay extra for xDrive, and sDrive models can also be speedy with fiery performance and often cheaper. You’ll need to weigh up whether the traction and all that comes with it is worth that extra cost.
