Driving position

The Formentor’s driving position is one of its strongest attributes. Unlike many crossovers that make you feel like you’re sitting on top of them, the Formentor sets you low and snug in the cabin, almost like a hot hatch.

The seat base drops deep into the floor, and the steering wheel adjusts generously, so you can find your ideal position.

It’s a refreshing change from the upright stance of most SUVs and immediately makes the car feel more dynamic on the road. If you are after a higher seating position, we’d recommend the CUPRA Ateca.

Forward visibility is excellent thanks to the slim A-pillars and a bonnet that falls away cleanly, giving you confidence when threading through tight streets or placing the car on a twisty road.

Rearward visibility is more compromised because of the coupé-style roofline and small rear window, but CUPRA offsets this with standard-fit parking sensors and a reversing camera.

Higher trims add a 360-degree camera system, which makes manoeuvring in multi-storey car parks stress-free.

The seats themselves are deeply bolstered without being restrictive, offering long-distance comfort and lateral support when needed.

Even entry-level trims feel well-shaped, while the sportier VZ models add bucket-style chairs that hug you in all the right places.

Tech and features

The CUPRA Formentor doesn’t just rely on style and performance – it’s packed with technology to make life easier and more enjoyable out on the road.

At its heart is a 12-inch infotainment screen, which offers crisp graphics, faster responses and a shortcut bar for climate and key functions.

It supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can mirror your smartphone seamlessly, and there’s an upgraded voice control system for hands-free commands.

The climate controls can be a little bit fiddly, like in other VW Group cars, but you soon get used to it.

Higher trims add a fully digital driver display with configurable layouts, giving you everything from navigation to performance data right in your eyeline.

Ambient lighting, wireless phone charging and multiple USB-C ports come as standard on most versions, while premium models get extras like a heated steering wheel, ventilated seats and a panoramic sunroof.

Performance

Our rating: 7/10

Engines and power

CUPRA Formentor performance stats

– Power: 150hp, 190hp, 204hp, 245hp or 310hp

– 0-62mph: 4.9 to 8.9 seconds

– Top speed: 155mph

– Driven wheels: Front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD)

The CUPRA Formentor has one of the most diverse engine line-ups in the crossover segment, catering to everything from efficiency to performance – and a bit in between.

At the entry point, the 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine produces 150hp and is great for most people.

It’s paired with either a manual or DSG automatic gearbox and front-wheel drive, making it ideal for city commutes and motorway driving while returning respectable fuel economy.

For those seeking electrification, the e-HYBRID plug-in models combine a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine with an electric motor and a sizeable battery pack.

This means that when charged regularly, these hybrids can deliver impressive efficiency and low running costs, especially for company car drivers, thanks to favourable BiK rates.

Sitting at the top of the range are the VZ performance models, including the 2.0 TSI variants with outputs up to a storming 310hp.

These versions bring all-wheel drive and launch control, slashing the 0-62mph sprint to under five seconds in the most powerful guise.

These cars feel more like hot hatches on stilts than family SUVs, with sharp throttle response, rapid gear shifts and a raspy soundtrack to match.

But whichever engine you choose, the Formentor delivers a sense of engagement that’s rare among crossovers.

Even the base models feel composed and eager, while the high-performance versions rival dedicated sports cars for excitement.

Handling and ride comfort

It may be an SUV, but the Formentor is genuinely agile for its size, making it feel more like a hatchback.

Its steering is quick and precise, giving you confidence at all times. Body control is excellent, with minimal roll even when you push on, and the car feels planted thanks to its wide track and low stance.

Adaptive suspension is available on higher trims, and it makes a noticeable difference. In Comfort mode, the Formentor smooths out most imperfections, making it perfectly civilised for everyday driving.

Switch to Sport or CUPRA mode and the dampers stiffen, sharpening responses and reducing body roll.

On UK roads, the ride can feel firm over potholes and broken surfaces, especially with larger wheels, but it never becomes harsh or unsettled.

If you want the best traction, you have to go for one of the all-wheel drive models. These are the best for challenging conditions, giving you the most amount of grip when you need it the most.

Practicality

Our rating: 7/10

Boot space

CUPRA Formentor boot space:

– Boot space: 345 to 450 litres

– Incl. Rear seats folded: 1,505 litres

The CUPRA Formentor’s boot is practical enough for everyday family life, though its sleek styling means it’s not the most cavernous in the class.

With the rear seats upright, petrol models offer 450 litres, dropping to 420 litres in all-wheel-drive versions and 345 litres in plug-in hybrids due to the battery pack.

Fold the rear seats down, and you unlock up to 1,505 litres, which is plenty for larger loads like flat-pack furniture or holiday luggage.

The load bay itself is well-shaped, with a wide opening and a low lip that makes lifting heavy items easier.

There’s a split-folding rear bench (60:40) and a useful ski hatch for longer items, plus underfloor storage for smaller bits and pieces.

While rivals like the Volkswagen Tiguan (652 litres) and Nissan Qashqai (504 litres) offer more outright space, the Formentor’s boot is still versatile enough for most needs.

Plus, you get the added bonus of a car that looks far sportier than those boxier alternatives.

Rear seats

Despite the car’s coupé-like roofline, there’s enough legroom for adults and decent headroom for most passengers, thanks to clever packaging and a relatively long wheelbase.

The bench itself is supportive, with a comfortable backrest angle and well-padded cushions, making longer journeys pleasant for rear occupants.

ISOFIX points are fitted on the outer rear seats, so installing child seats is straightforward, and the wide-opening rear doors make access easy.

The middle seat is usable for short trips, though it’s narrower and slightly raised, so two passengers will feel more comfortable than three.

Storage solutions

The CUPRA Formentor might lean towards style and sportiness, but it hasn’t forgotten everyday practicality.

Inside, you’ll find a good mix of useful storage spaces. The door bins are large enough to hold big water bottles, and the centre console offers a deep compartment beneath the armrest for valuables or small tech items.

Ahead of the gear selector, there’s a tray with wireless charging on most trims, plus two USB-C ports for easy device connectivity.

Cupholders are well-positioned between the front seats, and there’s an additional storage slot for keys or coins.

Rear passengers aren’t left out either, with decent-sized door pockets and a fold-down armrest that incorporates cupholders for added convenience.

The glovebox is reasonably spacious, and there are extra cubbies for odds and ends, making the Formentor feel practical despite its sporty design.

CUPRA Formentor dimensions

– Height: 1,520mm

– Width: 1,992mm (incl. mirrors)

– Length: 4,450mm

– Kerb weight: Up to 1,600kg

Safety

Driver assistance tech is comprehensive. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and traffic sign recognition are included, while top-spec cars offer a 360-degree camera system and semi-autonomous parking.

Safety kit, such as autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring, is standard, making the Formentor as reassuring as it is stylish.

We’re pleased to say it also scored a full five stars at its 2021 Euro NCAP safety test, which is a testament to its safety features.

Running costs

Our rating: 7/10

Fuel economy

The CUPRA Formentor’s efficiency depends heavily on which engine you choose – and there’s a lot of choice.

The entry-level 1.5 TSI petrol is the most frugal of the conventional engines, returning around 45mpg in mixed driving, making it a sensible choice for everyday use.

Step up to the 2.0 TSI performance models and economy drops to the low-30s, which is expected given their power and all-wheel-drive setup.

If you want the best figures, the e-HYBRID plug-in versions are the clear winners. When charged regularly, they can cover up to 37 miles on electric power alone, meaning short commutes and school runs can be done without using a drop of petrol.

Combine that with efficient hybrid running for longer trips, and you’ll see official figures well above 150mpg, though real-world results depend on how often you plug in.

Reliability

The CUPRA Formentor benefits from proven Volkswagen Group engineering, which means most of its components – engines, gearboxes, electronics – are shared with well-established models like the Golf and Tiguan.

This gives it a solid foundation for reliability. Plug-in hybrid versions add complexity, but the technology is mature and widely used across the VW Group, so long-term durability should be reassuring.

As with any performance-oriented car, higher-powered models may incur more wear on tyres and brakes, but nothing out of the ordinary for this segment.

The CUPRA Formentor is one of the most distinctive and rewarding crossovers on the market.

It combines sharp styling with a genuinely engaging driving experience, something few rivals can match.

With a wide choice of engines, from efficient petrols and plug-in hybrids to thrilling high-performance variants, the Formentor caters to a broad range of buyers.

If you want an SUV that feels special every time you drive it, this is the one to beat.
