The best-selling cars in the UK
We all like to keep good company. When you choose your next car, why not pick one of the best-selling cars in the UK?
According to SMMT data, the cars on this list were the most popular newly registered cars that topped the UK’s sales charts in 2024, meaning they're the ones to pick in 2025.
If you’re looking for a used car – whether it’s a supermini, crossover, SUV or electric family car – take a pick from these firm favourites.
And, even better, they'll be available on the used car market for lower prices soon.
Ford Puma – 48,340 registrations
Topping the list is the Ford Puma, which is the brand's new-ish crossover SUV that’s taken the Fiesta’s crown as the best-selling car in the UK.
With more space and a higher driving position than its Puma predecessor and Ford’s now-discontinued supermini, the Puma’s a sensible used car choice for families and working professionals alike.
Kia Sportage – 47,163 registrations
Being the largest petrol hybrid Kia makes, there’s no surprise the Sportage made it onto this list.
Not only does it offer great value for money, but you’re also getting a well-equipped SUV with up to 49mpg and a 540-litre boot for all your active kids’ stuff.
Nissan Qashqai – 42,418 registrations
Coming in a strong second place is the Nissan Qashqai, which has been around since 2007 and has sold millions since.
Designed in Paddington, London and built in Sunderland, this well-sized family SUV is the ideal choice for new families and those who can benefit from its large 504-litre boot.
Nissan Juke – 34,454 registrations
Being the baby brother to a very successful (Qashqai) sibling, the Nissan Juke should probably struggle to get noticed, but this isn’t the case.
In fact, the Juke sells incredibly well and offers a more compact driving experience, which makes it easier for a lot of people to live with – especially if you live in a town or city.
VW Golf – 32,370 registrations
Considering it's been out since 1974, we'd be stunned if the VW Golf didn't make this list.
It's been popular in this country as long as the humble steak pie has, offering plenty of boot space, practicality and impressive driving dynamics.
Plus, with sporty GTI and R versions, there's plenty of choice on offer – both new and used.
Hyundai Tucson – 32,174 registrations
Being so closely related to the Kia Sportage, it’s no surprise the Hyundai Tucson made it onto this list.
It gets a massive 640-litre boot, fuel-efficient hybrid petrol engines and good exterior looks to complete the family SUV package
MG HS – 30,207 registrations
With a refreshed look and loads of features, it's no surprise that the MG HS is such a popular buy in the UK.
There's the standard petrol model as well as a proper plug-in hybrid (PHEV), allowing up to 75 miles on electric power alone.

Volvo XC40 - 30,207 registrations
The Volvo XC40 is a perky SUV that drives like a much smaller car. Its solid build and buckets of tech mean it's no surprise it's one of 2025's best-sellers.
Sam Sheehan, our motoring editor, said: "It embraces a cool Swedish style both inside and out – and, of course, it’s full of the latest safety technology.
"Look out for hybrid and electric versions, too."
VW Polo – 28,981 registrations
Sitting below the Golf is the VW Polo – a nippy, efficient and practical hatchback.
With so much going for it, it's hard to see why you wouldn't want one. They're cheap to buy and run too, so it's an ideal car for new drivers or those on a budget.
